Climatologie fine des systèmes de vagues pour l'étude des systèmes houlomoteurs ArchiMer
Saulnier, Jean Baptiste.
This work focuses on the refinement of sea-states spectral characterisation in the frame of the development of wave energy converters (WECs). Until now, this characterisation has been limited to the consideration of basic global parameters such as the significant wave height and mean wave period. The present work namely underlines - thanks to simplified numerical models - that such a description is not sufficient to account for the performance of WECs, for they still exhibit a large variability in terms of mean production while wave energy and period are fixed. It is therefore needed to refine this description by introducing new wave characteristics, such as the wave groupiness, which is itself related to the sea-state's spectral bandwidth. The classical -...

Effect of wearing a swimsuit on hydrodynamic drag of swimmer BABT
Marinho,Daniel Almeida; Mantha,Vishveshwar Rajendra; Vilas-Boas,João Paulo; Ramos,Rui Jorge; Machado,Leandro; Rouboa,Abel Ilah; Silva,António José.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of wearing a swimsuit on swimmer's passive drag. A computational fluid dynamics analysis was carried out to determine the hydrodynamic drag of a female swimmer's model (i) wearing a standard swimsuit; (ii) wearing a last generation swimsuit and; (iii) with no swimsuit, wearing light underwear. The three-dimensional surface geometry of a female swimmer's model with different swimsuit/underwear was acquired through standard commercial laser scanner. Passive drag force and drag coefficient were computed with the swimmer in a prone position. Higher hydrodynamic drag values were determined when the swimmer was with no swimsuit in comparison with the situation when the swimmer was wearing a swimsuit. The last...

Aims - To detect and characterise extreme events in a coastal ecosystem by combining in situ high-frequency observations and high-resolution numerical simulations -To describe the interannual variability of extreme events in a context of climate change  -To quantify the links between extreme low salinity episodes and both large and local scale processes, using weather regimes, precipitations and river runoffs as proxies of hydro-climate forcing

Modélisation et analyse numérique du couplage filet-écoulement hydrodynamique dans une poche de chalut ArchiMer
Pichot, Geraldine.
We are interested in the numerical simulation of the catch process at the end part of a trawl. The study of previous works emphasizes the lack of a convincing flow model. The need of a physical understanding of the flow leads us to perform experimental campaigns around a rigid cod-end net model, whose results are given in the manuscript. We propose a model based on the Navier-Stokes/Brinkman equations coupled to an equation for the turbulent kinetic energy by the means of an eddy viscosity, with appropriate boundary conditions. Existence of a weak solution to our coupled problem is proved in dimension 2. Then, we present the axisymmetric code we developed, called SeaNet. We set the parameters of the model and validate the code by comparison with the...

Stability of some stationary solutions to the forced KdV equation with one or two bumps ArchiMer
Chardard, Frederic; Dias, Frederic; Nguyen, Hai Yen; Vanden-broeck, Jean-marc.
Free-surface flows past submerged obstacles in a channel are considered. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible and the flow to be irrotational. The first-order approximation of long nonlinear surface waves over one or two bumps results in a forced Korteweg-de Vries (fKdV) equation. Solutions of the stationary fKdV equation are constructed and their stability is studied, either analytically or numerically. These various solutions include solitary waves over a single bump, solitary waves with two humps over a double bump, table-top solutions over a double bump and fronts.

Lalire, Maxime.
Sea turtles are increasingly threatened by the direct and indirect effects of human activities. Their life cycle is complex, shared between various, and often very distant, habitats. Their conservation therefore requires identifying the habitats occupied at each stage of life and the migration routes between these different habitats. While the spatial ecology of adult turtles is relatively well known, particularly through satellite monitoring, the situation is not the same for juveniles which pelagic development phase remains largely unobserved. In that context, numerical simulation constitutes an appropriate tool to explore the dispersal of juvenile sea turtles from their natal beaches. Until now, simulations were mostly performed under the assumption...
